You may have seen milestone charts and thought, “my child doesn’t do that yet”. Have you compared your toddler to another child in the play group and wondered if yours is behind on their speech and language? Maybe you even brought it up to your pediatrician at their 18 month check up. Despite reassurances from friends, loved ones and your doctor that “they’re fine”, “their dad didn’t talk until he was 4”, or “we can wait and see”, you may still have a nagging feeling that you should DO something.
Here’s my advice- Talk to the expert! Speech therapists are THE experts regarding speech and language development. And YOU know your child best. I recommend scheduling a consult to discuss any and all concerns regarding your child’s speech and language. Maybe he or she has a couple of words. Maybe an older sibling does most of the talking for them. Maybe you are anticipating their needs so they don’t need to say anything. Schedule a consult and we can discuss your child’s current abilities and your concerns. We can then determine if a formal evaluation is needed which will inform me if speech and language therapy is warranted.
