- Parents & caregivers will be invited to participate. You know your child best. We want to ask you questions about medical history, developmental milestones, your expectations for therapy and hear your concerns about your child’s speech and language .
- The clinician will engage and interact with your child. We will talk with your child, play with them and probe them with different cognitive and speech and language tasks. We may complete an oral mechanism/motor exam if your child is feeling comfortable enough to let us look inside their mouth.
- Parents will be asked questions about developmental domains including cognitive skills, social-emotional skills and communication skills.
- Additional standardized assessments may be completed with your child, including the Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation to evaluate their speech skills.
- Evaluate your child’s stimulability with different tasks and give you activities you can try at home.
- The therapist may be able to determine if your child would benefit from speech and language therapy near the end of the evaluation. If so, they can discuss a treatment plan with you. The therapist will write up a report with results and give you a timeline for when you can expect to receive it. You may then schedule therapy sessions.
- You may assess compatibility with the therapist. Hopefully your child has warmed up to the therapist and you feel comfortable asking questions. Then you can decide how to move forward with speech and language therapy. Hopefully your expectations for the evaluation were met.
