Sensory Play + Speech

Even though I’m not an OT (occupational therapist) I love a sensory play. I create boxes, bowls, and bins with all sorts of sensory play themes. It’s simple to make and provides a lot of language opportunity.

*Please supervise your child with the sensory bin. Many contain small chokable items. It is important to watch that your child doesn’t put dangerous items in their mouths.*

  • Bin/bowl/box with lid.
  • Filler-dried beans, rice, sand, kinetic sand, play doh, shaving cream, whip cream, aqua/water beads, water, ice cubes, pebbles, paper grass, cotton balls
  • Themed toys-sea creatures, miniature dinosaurs, construction vehicles, sticks, rocks
  • Scoopers-measuring cups, spoons, ladles, droppers, pitchers

Dinosaur theme-with sand and pebbles, big and little dinos, and trees. Hide pictures of words that begin with “d” or letters

Ocean theme-water, shells, sand with sea creatures, palm trees. Work on plurals by adding two of the same items. I can usually work on a lot of “s” sounds with beach items. (surf, sand, sun, sit, swim, stingray, sand crab, striped, soft).

Construction theme-kinetic sand, rocks, sticks, construction workers and vehicles. Work on vocabulary, action words and multi-syllabic words.
